MP thanks foodbank volunteers

SHOPPERS at Tesco were once again called upon by volunteers from Ammanford Foodbank to help donate food parcels for those in need.

Each year The Trussell Trust, which operates over 400 food banks across the UK, and the FareShare organisation team up with retail giant Tesco to ask customers to donate long-life meals to those dependent on the service.

The 2016 December collection contributed 3.4million meals to the service.

Last year more than 95,000 3-day emergency food supplies were given by Trussell Trust foodbanks in Wales alone.

Local Member of Parliament Jonathan Edwards again joined volunteers to support the collection. He thanked volunteers for their efforts and urged those who are in a position to donate to consider helping out.

Jonathan Edwards MP said: “Officially opening the foodbank in Ammanford was one of the most humbling duties I’ve undertaken since being elected. To see so many people having to depend on the support of others due to a heartless London government is the most sobering of circumstances.

“That said, I am filled with a tremendous amount of pride knowing that we have so many generous and caring neighbours who give up their time, energy and money to ensure those who have fallen on difficult times can receive assistance.

“I am full of admiration of the volunteers and I offer my sincere thanks for all of their efforts.

“From my conversations at the collection I know there is a particular need for toiletries.

“My Assembly Member colleague, Adam Price and our staff team have pledged to donate a parcel of toiletries to the foodbank ahead of Christmas.

“I would urge anybody who is in a position to support the foodbank to kindly consider a donation.”
