New cancer support centre opens at Glangwili

glangwiliA BRAND new cancer support centre opens in Carmarthen today (Oct 12) at Glangwili Hospital. It’s being opened by the chair of Hywel Dda Univeristy Health Board, Bernadine Rees.

The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Centre is part of a £3.3 million investment the charity is making in the health board.

Bernadine Rees said: “We’re really proud to mark the opening of this information centre in Glangwili Hospital.

“Someone with a cancer diagnosis may feel overwhelmed by amount of information surrounding their diagnosis and treatment.

“I’m delighted we have been able to work with our partner, Macmillan, to provide this valuable service.”

Yvonne Lush, who is the Strategic Partnership Manage for MacMillan, said: “There are 7,500 people in Carmarthenshire living with and beyond cancer and 1,299 people are diagnosed each year.”

“Our vision is for everyone affected by cancer, both patients and those close to them, to have access to the information and support they need, whether this is at diagnosis, through treatment and afterwards to help them to manage the wider emotional or practical impact cancer can have.

“Macmillan Wales is really pleased to be working in partnership with Hywel Dda University Health Board to develop and deliver cancer information and support services across all three counties in the health board area.

“The centre in Glangwili provides high-quality written information for people affected by cancer but, more than that, Sarah Russell-Saw, our Macmillan Information and Support Co-ordinator, offers face-to-face and telephone support, as well as signposting people to other services, including welfare benefits advice.”

The new centre is open from Monday to Friday, with no appointment necessary.
