Paul Pugh celebrated at the Senedd

THE WORK of Paul Pugh and Dyfed-Powys Police has been highlighted and celebrated at an event held at the Senedd on Tuesday night (Mar 21).

Adam Price AM and Simon Thomas AM held an event at the Welsh Assembly to commemorate 10 years since the awful night that changed Paul Pugh and his family’s life forever.

10 years ago, Paul Pugh’s life changed forever. While enjoying with his friends in his close-knit community Ammanford, Paul has suffered at the hands of an unruly gang of young males which has left him brain damaged and physically impaired. This occurred as a result of drink and drugs and has clearly shattered and completely changed the lives of Paul and his family.

But, Paul Pugh and his family overcame the pain and heartache and committed to ensuring that others can learn from his story.

Over the last year Paul Pugh, his mother Nesta. Inspector Theresa Ross and PC Sharon Davies of Dyfed-Powys Police have travelled schools across Dyfed sharing Paul’s story and the hazardous crimes linked with alcohol.

‘Paul’s pledge’ has touched the hearts of thousands of young people across the whole of Dyfed Powys police force area.

The Plaid Cymru Assembly Members were keen to thank Paul, his family and Dyfed Powys Police for their work over the last year.

The Assembly Member for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Adam Price stated: “It was a privilege to welcome Paul, his family and members of Dyfed Powys Police to the Senedd to thank them for their hard work over the last year.

“Every time I listen to Paul speak, I’m blown away by his honesty and candour as he talks about a horrific and life-changing incident.

“Although he has faced indescribable suffering, Paul Pugh and his family are an excellent example of how to face and overcome problems and using that to educate and help others.”

The regional AM for Mid and West Simon Thomas, who co-sponsored the event with Adam Price AM, said: “It was a pleasure to hear Paul and PC Sharon Davies talk so passionately about the work they are doing to teach the next generation about the hazards linked with alcohol and drugs.

“The Paul’s Pledge message is clear and it is educational, informative and emotional however the dangers of alcohol and drugs clearly run throughout the presentation.

“Paul Pugh’s story is both heart-breaking and inspiring. As he spoke about his experiences last night, you could hear a pin drop in the Senedd.

“His story is as relevant today as it was 10 years ago and I can’t thank him, his family, and Dyfed Powys Police enough for taking this story to young people across the County and beyond.”

The Plaid Cymru Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed Powys Police Dafydd Llywelyn said: “Paul Pugh, Inspector Theresa Ross and PC Sharon Davies are a huge asset and a credit to us at Dyfed Powys Police. He has taught us all about the serious issues linked with alcohol and violence.

“The message is an important one, and as long as I’m Police and Crime Commissioner, Paul and the team will have 100% support from me and the Dyfed Powys Police force.”
