PONTARDDULAIS FIRE CADETS have become the proud owners of brand new personal protection equipment, including Fire Kit and Uniforms, thanks to the kind support of Western Power Distribution (WPD).
The Cadets were presented with the new PPE kit and uniforms during their weekly drill night (Mar 20) and wasted no time in putting the new equipment through its paces.
Formed within the past 12 months, the Pontarddulais Fire Cadets Scheme provides training to young people, usually between the ages of 12 and 16 years. The training includes operational drills, first aid, fire safety education, leadership and much more.
The new uniforms were well received by the Pontarddulais Fire Cadets.
Fire Cadet Sam commented, “The uniform is really smart and keeps you warm. I’m looking forward to wearing the uniform when we represent Pontarddulais at competitions with other Fire Cadets.”
Fire Cadet Katie was delighted with her new uniform, saying: “I feel proud and a part of something when I’m wearing the uniform.”
Fire Cadet Ben said: “I enjoy coming to Fire Cadets to meet friends and learn new skills. These uniforms make us look smart and part of a team. Thank you WPD.”
Phil Davies, WPD’s Network Services Manager for Wales, said: “We were pleased to support the Cadets. We believe businesses like ours should play a full and active role in the communities they serve.
“We hope the values and behaviours the youngsters receive during their training will help them develop valuable expertise in terms of communication skills and team working, which will be useful in their future careers.”
Watch Manager Anthony Mathias said: “The Pontarddulais Fire Cadet Scheme has only been running for a few months, and we already have ten children enrolled in the Scheme.
“The support we have received from the community has been overwhelming, all our instructors are made up of operational on-call firefighters who offer their time voluntarily, whilst parents also volunteer their time to help.
“The generosity shown by WPD is unbelievable. With the Scheme still in its infancy, WPD have come along and fully sponsored the Fire Cadets Scheme, which is fantastic for the young people and allows the Scheme to flourish in the future.”
Elaine Williams, Youth Development Officer for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are very grateful to WPD for supporting the Pontarddulais Fire Cadets. The Fire Cadets Scheme presents an opportunity for young people to develop self-confidence and respect for their communities.
“Cadets are encouraged to make the most of their physical and mental capabilities to become more responsible, safer and caring members of their communities. Those who successfully complete the scheme also gain a BTEC qualification.
“It is wonderful to receive WPD’s support for this scheme. I would encourage individuals, who wish to volunteer a few hours of their time each week, to support our Fire Cadets.”

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Fire Cadets Scheme provides training and development opportunities for young people, principally through Fire and Rescue Service related activities such as fire safety in the home, arson reduction, anti-social behaviour and road traffic collisions.
MAWWFRS is currently recruiting for volunteer Fire Cadet Instructors at the following Fire Stations: Cymmer, Seven Sisters, Morriston and Abercrave.
