Railway volunteer recruitment day a success

THE LLANELLI AND MYNYDD MAWR RAILWAY held a successful volunteer recruitment day at Cynheidrelast on October 28.

Visitors had a chance to talk to existing volunteers over a hot drink and were then given a guided tour around the site, before being given the opportunity to sign up as new members of the project.

The day was arranged to give potential new volunteers an opportunity to see what a typical volunteering day at the site entails and those that came to have a look were pleased with what they saw.

Project Director Des Thomas said: “We were very pleased with the interest shown throughout the course of the day and would like to thank those that took the time to attend today. I would also like to mention that we are always ready to welcome new volunteers at any time, not just on specific recruitment days, so if anybody is interested in doing so then please get in touch.”

Anyone interested in getting involved can contact the railway by visiting the railway Facebook page at www.facebook.com/llanellirailway, by email at [email protected] or getting in touch with Project Director Des Thomas on 01554 759255.

The charity has applied to the Aviva Community Fund for the funds required to restore their Avonside 0-4-0ST steam locomotive no. 1498 ‘Desmond’ so that it can become the first working steam locomotive at Cynheidre since 1969.
The locomotive is currently in storage at the Llangollen Railway and the railway requires £17,000 to restore Desmond back to steam and to bring it to Cynheidre.

The Aviva Community Fund involves the public voting for specific projects and we need your help by voting. Voting ends on November 21 at which point we hope to progress to become a finalist to be decided by a panel of judges.

Each person can cast 10 votes, so please use all towards our cause if you can and please ask as many people as you can to vote as well. Votes aren’t restricted per household so all the family can vote 10 times each.
