‘Vital’ pedestrian crossing assessment secured

THE WELSH GOVERNMENT has agreed to carry out an assessment on the potential for a pedestrian crossing in Tycroes, following lobbying by the local county councillor and Lee Waters AM.

Cllr Tina Higgins and Mr Waters have secured Welsh Government backing for a Pedestrian Crossing Assessment to be carried out on the A483 Ammanford Road.

Following a meeting held between Mr Waters, Cllr Higgins and officials from Welsh Government, the Transport Minister Ken Skates wrote to confirm the assessment will be carried out by April.

Mr Waters called for the meeting after concerns were raised by Cllr Higgins that there was no safe place for Tycroes residents to cross the busy main road, which cuts through the village.

Mr Waters said: “I’m very pleased the Welsh Government has agreed to carry out a full assessment on the potential for a pedestrian crossing in Tycroes. The A483 is a busy road and crossing it can really worry people – particularly older people and those with young children. It’s only right that something is done to address these concerns.”

The Assessment will take place as Welsh Government considers the implementation of parking restrictions on the main road, including the application of yellow lines down at least one side.

The Llanelli AM added: “Yellow lines are often used to ‘free-up’ roads – improving the line of sight for motorists, which gives them the confidence to drive faster. If these are introduced in Tycroes, it’s likely traffic volumes will increase and speeds will rise, which’ll only make the need for a safe crossing even more urgent. I’ll continue to press the Government to ensure the road doesn’t cause a deep division in the village.”

Cllr Higgins commented: “I’m delighted we’ve already received confirmation that the assessment will take place. Tycroes is a tight-knit community and a safe crossing is vital if people are to be able to get around our village.”

In the letter from Mr Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure wrote:

“I am pleased to confirm that funding has been identified for a Pedestrian Crossing Assessment to be carried out, in the current financial year, on the area of A483 Ammanford Road, Tycroes that was identified during the site visit. This assessment will determine if a crossing facility is required and if so, where the best location would be and what type of crossing would be most appropriate.”
