Rescue interrupts carnival preparations

BURRY PORT RNLI had to put their Carnival preparation on hold after they were called on to assist a motor cruiser in difficulty on Friday evening (Dec 1).

The crew met at 4.30pm to prepare the D Class lifeboat and accompanying vehicles for the annual winter Carnival.

However, at 4.31pm the pagers sprang into life, with a request to launch from UK Coastguard at Milford Haven, to assist a vessel that had broken down between Burry Holmes and Burry Port.

The Atlantic 75 B class ‘Leicester Challenge II’ was immediately launched, crewed by Rob Davies, Nick Jones and Rhydian Bowen, and located the casualty vessel a couple of miles out from the Harbour.

The vessel had lost power in one of two engines, and with the rapidly failing light required escorting back to Burry Port.

“The casualty vessel and Lifeboat returned to Burry Port at 5.30pm, so it was then a mad dash for all to make the start time for the carnival procession, but we did get there with a few minutes to spare,” a Burry Port RNLI spokesperson added.
