Research reveals over a third of Welsh people started 2016 with leftover debts

Meeting the voters: Helen Mary Jones

AY7AXRREWARDS site GetPaidTo have revealed in a recent survey that of the 2,000 Brits that took part, 35% of Welsh people started 2016 with outstanding arrears from 2015.

The survey also disclosed that 38% of people in Wales plan to save for their future this year, with the highest percentage of wannabe savers living in Cardiff (41%). Ever hopeful, 65% hoped to rid themselves of outstanding debts throughout 2016 and enter 2017 in the black.

Interestingly, young people are most likely to make a resolution to save for their own future, with over half (52%) of 16-24 year olds claiming that this year they will put away cash for a rainy day.

9% of forward thinkers also began saving for Christmas in January, but over 27% of people surveyed were still paying off their 2014 Christmas well into August of the following year.

Karim Wilkins, CEO at cashback and rewards website GetPaidTo, said:  “Using GetPaidTo’s Christmas Saver Club, people can be more prepared than ever saving for Christmas now and helping them start next year without all that leftover Christmas debt.”

On average, the survey respondents said their resolution is to save around £216.85 a month, but with 24% of people having no plans to save a certain amount, perhaps it indicates that although well intended, a lot of resolutions to generally “save money” will not become a reality.

It was exposed that the Welsh take the longest to repay debt with their average amount of repayment time being 11.89 months, compared to the UK average of 9.3 months.
