CONSULTATION for a new multi-million pound school for Gorslas started this week.
Until November 20, people will be asked for their views on the proposed new build.
The current Gorslas site and school buildings do not meet Carmarthenshire’s standards in terms of the facilities they offer and the teaching and resource areas required. Neither do they meet the standards for environmental efficiency and sustainability.
The proposed high specification, modern building for the school would accommodate the increasing demand for Welsh medium education with 210 primary places available, plus room for an external nursery.
It would also provide the opportunity to share resources with the community, such as a multi-use games area, sports pitch and the school hall.
A formal planning application is expected to be submitted following the four-week consultation period.
Feedback from the consultation will be captured in a pre-planning application consultation report which will form part of the process.
The consultation is available online and also at Ammanford and Cross Hands libraries. Library opening hours are: Ammanford – Monday and Thursday 9am to 7pm; Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 9am to 6pm; and 9am to 5pm on Saturdays. Cross Hands: Monday and Thursday 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm, and 10am to 1pm on Saturdays.
The major investment would be part of Carmarthenshire County Council’s Modernising Education Programme (MEP),jointly funded by the council and the Welsh Government, through its 21st Century Schools initiative.
The council’s executive board member for education and children’s services, Cllr Glynog Davies said: “We have already carried out informal consultation with the community regarding a new school for Gorslas and this is now the next step in the formal process.
“The current school building is not fit for purpose, and certainly does not provide the kind of learning environment we all want for our children and grandchildren.
“The new building will provide staff and pupils with accommodation and facilities fit for the 21st Century, it will ensure that the highest quality teaching and learning can be provided, and will also have first class facilities the community can use.”
