Six Nations TV Licensing Warning

Don’t let a hefty fine ruin your six nations
Don’t let a hefty fine ruin your six nations

AS THE RUGBY Six Nations approaches, pub landlords and managers across Carmarthenshire are being reminded to check their pub is covered by a TV License, or risk paying a hefty fine.

With the tournament set to return as a spectacular competitive event, fans across Carmarthenshire will be storming to pubs and bars to watch the coverage, which are set to feature Carmarthen born Ken Owens in action.

The TV Licensing and the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII) are sending reminders out to all pub owners and managers who will be showing the championship that a TV license is required to watch or record any coverage of live games in a public house.

Anthony Pender, Chairman of the British Institute of Innkeeping (BII), the leading professional body for the UK’s licensees, said: “Watching sport in the pub is a great British tradition, and we are sure the Six Nations will prove no different. However, it’s important that licensees making the most of live sport and the revenue opportunities it presents are doing so legally. We’d urge all those in the industry planning to show the tournament to check they have purchased a TV licence beforehand.”

Unlicensed pubs and bars will receive visits from TV Licensing throughout the tournament, and those without a valid license to show the games are doing it illegally. Anyone caught breaking the law run the risk of a court prosecution, and a fine of up to £1,000 for each offence.

A TV Licensing Wales spokeswoman, Catherine Griffith- Williams, said: “To be fair to the majority who do pay the licence fee, we have to take action against those who try to get away with not paying.

Any pub landlord or manager who does not have a TV License, can purchase one easily in just a few minutes through an online form which can be found at http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/businessinfo or by phoning the TV Licensing business team on 0300 790 6112.
