Top shops multiply in Llandovery

Catrin and Marlene Davies: In their new Llandovery shop, Davies & Co

LLANDOVERY is on the up. The once forlorn end of Stone Street at the junction with High Street has a third newly opened shop, between Anne Ennion’s ‘Stone Street Boutique’ and Heidi Davies’ ‘La Patisserie’.

The latest shop, Marlene Davies’ ‘Davies & Co’, opened on Thursday, August 4, and covers the ground and first floors of 1 Stone Street, which was empty after closing as a pound shop.

Marlene’s daughter, Catrin, about to enter Year 13 at Llandovery College, did an opinion survey in the town, asking what sort of shop residents felt was needed, and discovered a preference for good quality furniture, home furnishings and gifts.

“We are hugely pleased so far,” said Marlene, on the shop’s fifth day of trading. “We’ve had fantastic support locally. We sold out of a lot of items and have more coming in.

“It’s important for us to sell bespoke items made in Wales, and we are very happy to be stocking Pentwyn Welsh tweed, made into furnishings such as blankets just outside Llandovery in Myddfai. Unusually, we have blankets made for king-size as well as for double and single beds.”

Lili Wen textiles and animal portraits from Miranda Bowen, who lives on a dairy farm at Idole near Carmarthen, are prominent in the shop, as are wooden furnishings in country house style, upholstered chairs, kitchen accessories, and all sorts of decorative items. The shop exudes expensive rustic charm but considering the high quality, prices are reasonable and start from under £5. The shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm.
