screen-shot-2016-11-17-at-15-52-55FORMER star Drovers player Eifion Gwynne was killed in a traffic accident on Saturday (Oct 22), two days before his 42nd birthday. He was in Spain to attend a funeral when he was knocked down by a vehicle in Estepona, near Malaga.

Eifion, a popular electrician in Aberystwyth, played for Llandovery RFC, the Drovers, between 2003 and 2007, and the back row specialist was Man of the Match when the Drovers won the Konica Minolta Welsh Cup for the first time in 2007, beating Cardiff by 20 points to 18.

Handel Davies, President of Llandovery RFC, said: “Cymro i’r carn oedd Eifion Gwynne. A Welshman to the core. One of the nicest people. Quite simply a truly fantastic person and an outstanding rugby player. He is one of those rare people who you feel privileged to have known and a lifelong friend to all who knew him. Our heart goes out to his wife and children in their immeasurable loss.”

After retiring from top-flight rugby with the Drovers, Eifion played for Aberystwyth RFC in his hometown, where he will be missed.
