Tributes to County Councillor Alun Davies

PLAID CYMRU representatives have paid tributes to their friend and colleague, County Councillor Alun Davies, who passed away on Monday morning (May 28), aged 60.

Alun represented the communities of Capel Hendre, Saron, Penybanc, Cwmgwili and Gwynfryn on Llandybie Community Council for many years before being elected as the County Councillor for Saron Ward in 2012, and topped the poll at his re-election in 2017.

During this time he was also Chair of Plaid Cymru Carmarthen East and Dinefwr Constituency Party, overseeing a successful period for the party in both Parliamentary and Assembly elections.

Outside of politics, Alun worked for the Wales Air Ambulance, helping communities raise money for the vitally important service.

His colleague in Saron Ward, County Councillor Carl Harris said: “We’re all very sad to have lost a good friend and a great Councillor today. Alun was a genuinely lovely person and was liked by so many. He always had a few jokes in his back pocket and would enjoy cheering everybody up.

“He worked his socks off for local residents. There isn’t a part of the ward where Alun hasn’t done something to help. The safety improvements at Capel Hendre and a new footpath along Dyffryn Road will undoubtedly be his legacy in our community.

“We’re all thinking of Alun’s wife, Karen, and their family at this time. I hope she can take some comfort in knowing that Alun, who loved her very much, was himself loved by so many.

“We will all miss him terribly. Gorwedd mewn hedd, cyfaill. Rest in peace, my friend.”

Member of Parliament Jonathan Edwards said: “Alun was a tireless worker for his community and for Plaid Cymru. He oversaw some of our most successful election campaigns during his time as Chair of the constituency party, and he thoroughly enjoyed getting out onto the streets to speak with voters.

“He has made a huge contribution to local politics and the cause of Plaid Cymru. I have very fond memories of campaigning together, and I couldn’t have asked for more in a friend and colleague. Rest in peace, comrade.”

Assembly Member Adam Price said: “Alun was a lovely guy and a great advocate for the residents of Saron Ward, but his contributions in the Council were always to try to help all Carmarthenshire residents, not just those who put their trust in him to be their representative.

“Alun would also selflessly volunteer his time to travel to other constituencies across Wales and help the cause such was his passion for Plaid Cymru and for our nation. May he rest in peace.”
