Wales is home to unhappy marriages

Screen Shot 2016-04-06 at 15.00.01A RECENT POLL when the vast majority of happily married couples meet, and that Wales is home to one of the highest percentages of unhappy spouses.

It was also exposed that those who met their future spouses in November were more likely to class their marriage as an unhappy one.

The survey was conducted by diamond jewellery brand Vashi, as part of their ongoing research into British relationships.

The 2,944 anonymous married Britons who took part in the survey had been married to their partner for at least three years, and the people taking part were from an equal spread of all of the 12 different UK regions.

Initially, respondents were asked “How happy is your marriage?” They were told to give a score from one to ten, with ten being the happiest they could possibly be. The average answer to this question was six out of 10.

It was found that couples in Wales and the South West were the unhappiest, with the average answer recorded being a measly three out of 10.

The next question the respondents were asked was to state that month of the year in which they met their partner.

The team at Vashi analysed the responses of all those who stated that their marriage was a ten on the happiness scale, and found that an overwhelming 34% met their significant other in the month of March. The team then considered the couples on the other end of the spectrum, who scored their marriage as an unhappy one out of 10, and found that the most common meeting month for unhappily married couples was November, with a score of 19%.

Vashi Dominguez, of www. vashi.com, said of the survey findings: “Every marriage is the fruition of a different journey, with unique triumphs, challenges and lessons learned along the way.

“Having said that, we have uncovered some very interesting trends in our quest to find the recipe to success, with those in the North being shining examples of happy marriages and those in the South West, Wales and London typically falling behind.

“These scores reflect that a happy marriage is not made overnight; it’s an ever-evolving and changing process and a true labour of love.”

In addition to meeting in March, the survey identified further secrets to successful marriages and higher happiness ratings from further questions in the polls.

61% of people with the happiest marriages were found to have known each other for 60 months or more at the time of getting engaged, whilst 43% of least happy spouses were found to have known each other for a short 12-23 months.

Interestingly, the least happy married couples were most likely to have met at work (17%), and the happiest were most likely to have met on dating apps or dating websites (19%).

Mr Dominguez continued: “March is well upon us and this survey has led us to wonder about how many new acquaintances have been made this month. According to these results, they could blossom into the next wave of happily married couples!

“We can see why March has been crowned the month of love; the sun has started to shine again, spring is certainly in the air and it’s a perfect time of year for new beginnings.”
