YSGOL Bro Banw’s chairman of governors, Huw Evans, has resigned from his position, the Herald can reveal.

A spokesperson for Carmarthenshire County Council has said that a new interim chair of the Governing Body has been appointed to ensure that the school continues to make progress.

Robert Sully, the council’s Director of Education added: “Arrangements are in hand to support the school in all aspects.

“Should any parents have any concerns at all they should contact the school.”

The school had been placed in the green band of school categorisation but despite that, Estyn has found that it needs ‘significant improvement’.

The damning report from Estyn led to calls for all governors to step down from their role, as well as the head teacher, Meryl Davies.

Questions have been raised as to how the school in Ammanford was placed in the green band with such shortcomings.

Estyn found that the Governors had ‘limited’ understanding of the schools performance data.

The Estyn report also found that school leaders have failed to check the accuracy of teacher assessment enough or consider assessment outcomes rigorously alongside the evidence of standards in pupils’ books.

More tellingly, the school’s selfevaluation report does not present an accurate and honest picture of the school’s strengths and weaknesses, while leaders have been unsuccessful in ensuring that pupils from deprived backgrounds achieve their potential.

Estyn has also criticised the school’s recruitment process and suggests that best practice is not followed for appointments to leadership posts, while staff are not provided with equal access to opportunities for development and promotion.
