Plans to turn an old rugby social club in Merthyr Tydfil into flats

THERE are plans to turn an old rugby social club in Merthyr Tydfil into flats.

An application has been submitted to the council to convert Treharris Rugby Club’s former social club on Perrott Street into 15 flats.

The design and access statement submitted with the application said that it has been empty for some 20 years and that the application will consist of a full change of use for a development of 15 residential units with associated access and infrastructure.

It added that: “The proposals will provide a viable long-term use for the site and maximise the land available together with safe and accessible access to the adjoining highway and footway network.”

The site is located on the eastern side of Perrott Street and to the south of the B4254 (Cardiff Road).

The statement said that the site currently houses a former rugby club clubhouse and function suite, bar and club, which is an established two/three–storey building with its own highway access directly off Perrott Street.

It is understood that Treharris Rugby Club stopped using the clubhouse many years ago and the property was left vacant with no viable use or user found before now.

The site currently has an access for vehicles and pedestrians from Perrott Street and a pedestrian access via the service lane to the east, which serves as an access road to the public car park located to the south of the site, with 45 spaces.

It added that the application site is located within the defined settlement limits of Treharris as defined within the adopted Local Development Plan.

Along with the 15 one-bed apartments there would internal access areas, storage, a garden, bin store and bicycle storage areas.

They would all be private apartments with an element of affordable tenure apartments due to their size and associated value.

Access to the proposed development will be via the existing site access directly off Perrott Street and via the existing service lane to the east of the site with direct access to the public car park.

The proposed development is “easily and readily accessible” to pedestrian and cyclists from the adjoining highway network with provision for pedestrian/cycle links to existing footways, the design and access statement said.

The proposals allow for covered bicycle stands for six bicycles but this can be increased as required, it added.
