Family promised answers at inquest of man killed in plane crash

A PRE-INQUEST into the death of a Carmarthenshire-born man who died when an Egyptair flight crashed into the Mediterranean Sea last May saw Carmarthenshire Coroner Mark Layton pledge to do everything he possibly could to ascertain how he died.

Qualified geologist Richard Osman was a passenger on Flight MS804, which is believed to have crashed into the Mediterranean in the early hours of May 19, 2016, when en route from Paris to Cairo, killing all 56 passengers.

The pre-inquest hearing in Llanelli Town Hall on September 29 revealed that at present the crash was being investigated by the Egyptian Air Accident Investigation Committee.

However, no report had been released, although it is the protocol for an interim report to be published within 12 months of the incident.

Mr Layton explained that he had contacted the Air Accident Investigation Committee, only to be told that his enquiries should be referred to the Egyptian Prosecutor’s Office.

The UK’s Air Investigation Board also had no information to offer.

Mr Layton told the family’s solicitor, who attended via a phone link, that he would do everything he could possibly do to establish how Mr Osman came to meet his death. However, he warned that this could take a considerable period of time.

The inquest was adjourned until the end of February 2018.
