CARMARTHEN HARRIERS and Dyfed Schools Athletics had a very busy but successful weekend with two athletics events held in Carmarthen and Neath over the weekend of June 5-7.
The action got underway on Friday evening where 7 events were held ahead of the big day on Saturday. The first Dyfed schools record of the 2015 Dyfed Secondary Schools Athletics Championships was broken by Christian Lovatt (Dyffryn Aman) in the Senior Boys 3000m with a time of 8.40.8.
For the schools athletes and teachers, all roads from Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire led to the Carmarthen Leisure Centre early on Saturday where the eight-hour program began on the field at 10am with the first hurdles heats a short time after.
Further records were broken throughout the afternoon including the following: Iwan Glynn (Bro Myrddin) Y7 1500m 4.52.4, Lucy Davies (Dyffryn Taf ) MG 1500S/C 6.02.9 and Rachel Donnison (Penglais) SW 400m 57.9.
There were also great performances by all the Harriers members who for one day only were competing against each other rather than with one another. The Dyfed Schools team for the Welsh schools track and field championships to be held, once again as part of the Urdd’s Gemau Cymru sporting weekend on July 4, was chosen straight after the Dyfed event with a letter sent to all pupils.
The theme of perfect weather conditions for athletics running continued at the Cwrt Herbert Sports Centre track in Neath.
After competing the day before, over 20 athletes from Carmarthen who were joined by many other juniors, travelled to compete in the second round of this year’s U15 Louise Arthur League. 68 from the club were present and once again there was another great performance from the team and all contributed towards vital points.
After a brilliant start to the campaign at the home match in May, the youngsters turned out in numbers to compete, ensuring that it was another brilliant third position out of the nine clubs, finishing behind Swansea and Pembrokeshire, scoring a total of 1000 points. There were also numerous new personal bests recorded. With 2 matches to go, the club is on course to get to the Welsh cup final in August.
