Goodwick strike late to deal a blow to Hakin’s title hopes

GOODWICK United remain on course for the Division 1 title after they beat Hakin United 2-1 in front of a good crowd at Pheonix Park on Saturday (Apr 8).

The game between the two sides earlier in the season had finished in similar fashion with Rhys Dalling scoring late on to earn his side a 3-2 win at the Obs.

It looked as if the first half would finish goalless but on the stroke of half time Rhys Jones struck to give his side the advantage.

Hakin looked for a way back into the game in the second period and it finally came midway through the second half with Nicky Woodrow levelling the score at 1-1.

Both sides were keen to find the crucial third goal of the game but it wasn’t until injury time that the drama started to unfold.

In the 92nd minute, Luke Hayward’s ball into the box fell to Dalling and he fired in to spark wild scenes amongst players and supporters.

They held on for the win to give themselves one hand on the Division 1 trophy.

The win means Goodwick sit top of the table on 58 points with one game left to play. Hakin have five games left, starting on Tuesday, away to Pennar, with fifteen points to play for. Should they win all those five games they would be on 60 points. It means they would need Goodwick to draw or lose their final game in order for them to pick up the title.

Goodwick’s final game of the season is on Saturday, April 15, and sees them travel to Monkton Swifts.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Carew moved to within a point of the top four as they beat St Clears 6-0. The Saints have found it tough all season and only travelled with ten players for this game.

Adam Muskett opened the scoring after just two minutes and James Hinchliffe added a second midway through the half.

Sonny Phillips also scored and another goal from Muskett made it 4-0 at the break. Late goals from subs Charlie Perkins and Harvey Drummond sealed the win for the Rooks.

Carew are in action on Thursday, April 13, as they host Neyland. They also travel to Pennar on Saturday, April 15.

St Clears have one final game this season and it sees them host Hakin United on Saturday, April 15.
