Status quo remains in Neyland blackspot traffic area

Kensington Road

‘An accident waiting to happen’ is how Neyland residents view the stretch of road leading from Honeyborough Road to the High Street via Kensington Road.

But this week, despite repeated requests for traffic calming measures to be implemented, residents were told that the status quo looks set to remain.

The announcement was made following a seven-day summary of traffic travelling northwards and southwards along Kensington Road.

The mean average speed of the 3,345 vehicles that used the road over a seven-day period amounted to 24 mph, which was well within the 30 mph speed limit.

But local residents fear that the speed restriction is being flouted by many motorists who are regularly seen travelling way in excess of the speed limit.

Pedestrians, including a high number of schoolchildren, regularly use this stretch of road as they make their way to the bus stop, the primary school and the commercial outlets on the High Street.

But if there is a repeat of the recent ricochet incident, there are fears that a pedestrian could be seriously injured.

“Unfortunately, it’s the issue of a small number of vehicles that are responsible,” commented Cllr Mike Harry at a recent meeting of Neyland Town Council.

Meanwhile members are hopeful that the new 20mph default speed restrictions which are being introduced on September 17 will help improve the safety of Kensington Road.

The new restrictions are part of a Welsh government initiative aimed at improving safety levels in residential and built-up areas. It is antiipated that the new restrictions will reduce the number of collisions and subsequent injuries and also encourage more people to walk and cycle in their local communities.
