PLAID CYMRU’s Shadow Economy Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth has pledged to tap into Wales’ entrepreneurial spirit as figures reveal that the number of business start-ups in Wales is amongst the lowest in the UK.

Figures show that with 11,345 new businesses in Wales in 2015, Wales had fewer business births than the rest of the UK, and that the Welsh Government should seek innovative ways of helping new businesses.

Rhun ap Iorwerth said: “Plaid Cymru wants to tap into Wales’ entrepreneurial spirit. The figures show that the currently people are dissuaded from taking the exciting step of starting their own business compared with other parts of the UK, and we need to address the anomalies that could be holding potential business owners back.

“Plaid Cymru has a robust plan to turn the Welsh economy around with plans including major investment in our infrastructure; increasing Wales’ exports; ensuring more public sector contracts are awarded to Welsh companies which will create tens of thousands of new jobs; as well as cutting business rates for small businesses to stimulate this important sector of our economy.

“Business rates are one of the biggest causes for concern for business owners, Our plans will address some of the problems in the current system, lowering business rates for 83,000 businesses and bringing 70,000 businesses out of paying rates altogether.”
