27 point Phelps helps Gorseinon thump Amman

On report: Initial teacher training under due for overhaul.

Gorseinon 59
Amman United 12

AMMAN travelled to Gorseinon in the midst of an injury crisis with six players unavailable. It was a crisis that had led to veteran coach Gareth Davies having to roll back the years to start for his side at centre.
The crisis was upgraded to a disaster with little more than ten minutes on the clock as Adam Poole and Liam Mangan had to leave the field through injury. This meant Amman had to shuffle the pack and with several players out of position the outcome of the game seemed inevitable.
The visitors did produce a display of real togetherness in a close first half and got to the interval with little more than a two point deficit to make up, trailing as they did 14-12. A penalty try converted by Rhys Williams and a superb Johnny Bevan try proved to be little more than consolations for Amman.
Gorseinon notched eight well worked tries, but will be disappointed they didn’t score more as numerous opportunities went begging. Rhodri Phelps was the standout performer for Gorseinon with a 27 point haul including one try and 22 points with the boot.
Kieron Craig, Sean Haycock, Dai Rees and Andrew Burder also got on the scoresheet and Matthew Stoneham scored a double.
