Mumbles (94) lost to Ammanford (97-2) by 8 wkts

AMMANFORD returned to their winning ways with an eight wicket victory in another rain-affected, low-scoring match at Mumbles on Saturday (Jun 25) .

Mumbles were invited to bat and immediately , the two Murphy brothers, Jack and Tom, set amongst the Mumbles batsmen, dismissing both openers with the score barely in double figures.

17 -year -old Tom took a second wicket to have Mumbles on the ropes at 15 for 3, and this set the trend for the remainder of the Mumbles innings.

Wickets fell regularly and runs were difficult to come by for the home team.

Spinner Matthew Roberts returned excellent figures of 3 for 9, whilst Tom Murphy returned to clean up the tail with 4 for 11.

They were helped by some top-class fielding, eight of the wickets coming from some excellent catches, which, as we know, win matches.

Mumbles’s best batting performance came from number 10 , Ryan Ainsworth , with 21.

Daniel Roberts (16) and Ieuan Rosser (15) were the only other two to reach double figures.

Mumbles were all out for 94 in the last of their 40 overs.

Despite losing opener Rhys Davies early on, Ammanford made solid inroads to their modest target.

Alun Evans joined opener Elis Richards and these put on 36 before Evans was caught out for 12.

Matthew Fisher replaced his captain and, mindful that Wales’s historic Euro knockout match against Northern Ireland was due to start at 5pm, set about achieving victory with gusto.

Fisher scored 36 of the 54 partnership which won the match by eight wickets, whilst Richards carried his bat for a faultless 34 .

The winning run was exquisitely timed at 4.50pm, which gave them an ample 10 minutes to shower and change before kick-off.

Ammanford are now in what is effectively the middle tier of Premier One , drawing away from the bottom three, but not quite up with the top boys from the East.

Next Saturday (Jul 2) sees the season’s cycle return to the start, with Ammanford entertaining top of the table Newport who gave them such a hammering in the first match of the season.

It will be a stern test of how far Ammanford have progressed.

Next Sunday (Jul 3) , Ammanford welcome an Ospreys XI in a charity match at the Park , sponsored by Morganstone , for Prostate Cancer.
