Blues bow out of cup

bow outHaverfordwest 6 Aberystwyth 13

LAST YEAR’S winners were unable to reach the final four of the Pembrokeshire KO Cup as Aberystwyth picked up the win on the road in a game which could have gone either way.

Haverfordwest made the brighter start in heavy conditions after strong play from the forwards. Mike Jones struck an early penalty giving the Blues a 3-0 lead, but both Jones and Grant Rodgers missed kickable penalties, and the score remained 3-0 at half time.

After the break, Aberystwyth began stronger and Llyr Thomas kicked two penalties after ill discipline from the Blues. Grant Rodgers was able to level the scores with a penalty. Haverfordwest missed chances to take the lead and Aberystwyth were able to snatch victory with a soft try from Daniel Binks from a 5 meter scrum. Llyr Thomas converted the try to seal the win.

Haverfordwest will be disappointed with the loss against a side a division above, when they had chances to seal a home win. Aberystwyth now face Cardigan in the semi-final. Haverfordwest host Gorseinon on January 18 in their next Division 3 West fixture.
