Borth win nine-goal thriller

Mid Wales League Division 2

Builth Wells 4

Borth United 5

BORTH UNITED closed the gap on leaders Kerry on Saturday (Mar 18) as they won a nine goal thriller.

On a bright afternoon Borth United visited Lant Field for their match against Builth Wells and no one could quite expect what was to come.

There was an amazing start to the match as Liam Lewis lobbed the ball over the keeper to give Borth the lead in the sixth minute.

Borth were not ahead for long as Dave Thomas equalised for Builth just two minutes later.

As Borth pressed forward, only a fine save by the Builth keeper denied Liam Lewis his second goal.

Liam Berner then scored the goal of the match with a rasping shot from thirty yards for Borth to lead 2-1.

Within three minutes Ben Jones extended Borth’s lead with a cool finish, and the Borth goals kept on coming with Ryan Davies scoring from the penalty spot.

Builth were themselves awarded a penalty kick in the final minutes of the half and Dave Thomas scored from the spot to give a 2-4 score at the interval.

The goal just before the break gave Builth the impetus for an all-out attack as the second half progressed and Dave Thomas’s goal and his well-deserved hat trick brought the hosts back into the match.

Liam Lewis was then denied his second goal as the Builth keeper saved the striker’s penalty kick.

The hosts completed a fine comeback when Gethin Jarman scored with a superb finish to make it 4-4.

However, with the match in injury time Ben Jones’s free kick into the Builth penalty area enabled Jay Walker to lob the keeper for the winning goal.

With no games next weekend due to the International break, Borth will be back in league action for a crucial match at Uppingham Fields against Newbridge-on-Wye on Saturday, April 1, kick-off 2:30pm.
