IT WAS A busy Bank Holiday for both the Junior and Senior sections of Carmarthen Harriers as both were out at various events as the athletics season begins to get into full swing.

The Under 17/20 West Wales athletes made the long journey south to Plymouth, as part of the composite team to compete in the first fixture of the UK Youth Development League. Having been promoted to the top Premier West Division two years ago, the team did well to finish strongly where they left off last year in third place behind the ever strong Avon and hosts Devon & Cornwall composite teams.

It was a fantastic day on the track despite the transport problems on the way home and they now look forward to the upcoming events, which includes a home match in Carmarthen in June.

The Harriers involved in Plymouth were: William Edwards, Sam Bleach, Joe Worrall, Nicholas Jones, Rhys Thomas, Alicia Samuel, Celyn Williams, Danielle Jones & Amelia Davey.

Meanwhile at the British Universities and Colleges champs at Bedford, Aled Price leaped 7.21m in the long jump and Rachel Donnison had a time of 56.34s in the 400m. Kyran Roberts ran the 5000m in 15.00.44 and Enfys Jones cleared 2.50m in the senior pole vault.

On May Day, while many runners of all ages from the club took part in the Carmarthen Mayor’s Races in the town centre, others headed over the bridge to Somerset for the annual BMC Millfield PB Classic event at Street on Monday evening, which featured many top class athletes in Wales and England.

The long journey and late return was more than justified by some great results and saw a host of personal bests recorded over series of middle distances races and something to build on for the rest of the summer.

There were big pb’s for Thomas Jones (4m 19) Tomos Rees (4m 28) Iwan Glynn (4m 34) and Archi Morgan (4m 48) in the 1500 metres, while Ben Thomas ran a new quick time of 9m 13 in the 3000m and there was a further best time for Iestyn Williams (2m 09) in the 800m.

Other athletes’ results on the evening included: Daisy Thompson (2m 26), Ashraf Liles (1m 57) and Dwayne Griffiths (2m 01) in the 800, plus Callum Lovatt (4m 52) in the 1500m.

The annual charity Trap Fun Run saw its biggest turnout in 22 years in 2016. Callum Lovatt (17.06) and Non Morgan (19.58) were 1st in the Years 9-11 with Iestyn Jones-Evans 4th (19.36); Dafydd Jones (17.54) and Phoebe Davis (18.04) winners in the Years 7 and 8 categories. Iestyn Williams was 5th in the Open Male (29.46) and Gwion Jones-Evans was 8th in the Years 5 and 6 (25.44).

Phoebe was awarded the Brecon Carreg Shield for outstanding contribution to Trap Fun Run, while at the Porthkerry 5 mile race, Sharon Leech was a clear ladies winner in a time of 34.56.

On Sunday (May 15), the club will be represented as they aim to win medals at the West Wales Outdoor Athletics Championships at Swansea University Track for Under 13 to Senior age groups.
