JAKE DOAN, a third year BSc Personal Training Health & Exercise student at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) in Carmarthen has been competing in the MASS Games and is in the running to be named Male Athlete of the Year.

MASS (Muscular Athletic Student Society) sees university teams and individual students from across the country competing across 5 sports to take home the prestigious titles of University Champions and Male and Female athletes of the Year. MASS is a society developed by David Bissell, a well-known name in the fitness industry who set up the UK’s first university based fitness/bodybuilding competition.

MASS is a society where students can train, compete, and develop health lifestyle choices for the future while enjoying the company of likeminded individuals.

Canadian, Jake Doan, who has set up a MASS society at UWTSD Carmarthen, has been going from strength to strength in the various competitions held by MASS.

In November 2015, Jake won first place in the MASS Southern Student Powerlifting Championship at Bournemouth Barbell in the under 105kg category. Jake also won awards in this competition for Biggest Squat and Biggest Bench categories.

More success followed in December as the University’s MASS society travelled to Bristol to compete in the MASS Strongest Man Southern Championship. Competitors included Jake, UWTSD’s MASS president, Co- Vice Presidents Nathan Collins and Charles Parsons, all of whom are 3rd year Personal Training and Health & Exercise students. Also part of the team was Kelsey Robertson, BA Acting student new to the strongman sport.

The results saw Jake Doan as the Male Open Winner, winning 3 out of 5 of his events, and ranking second in the other two events. Charles Parsons took first in the under 85 kg’s category. Nathan Collins and Kelsey Robertson both came 3rd in their respective categories.

UWTSD collected an overall total of 178 team points, resulting in winning the University Team Award. The day’s events included max tyre flips, Weighted Car Chassis Hold, Loading Medley, Log Press, and Max repetitions in 60 seconds during Head to head deadlift.

Each event in the MASS Games allows athletes to collect points for an overall total score. After just two events in their first year of participation, the UWTSD team has been ranked 6th place out of 29 universities, with 3 events still to come, with Jake Doan in first place overall. What makes this achievement greater is the fact that Jake has only competed in 2 of the 5 events and already he has 14 points. The athlete currently in second place has 8 points.

It is now anticipated that Jake will finish highly in the March 12 MASS SPC Championships in Bristol bringing glory back to Carmarthen.
