FOR the fifth consecutive year the final of the Welsh Rugby Union schools and colleges competition was between Coleg Sir Gar and Coleg Y Cymoedd.

The game was played at Cardiff Arms Park and officiated by World Cup final referee Nigel Owens.

This was a game where the cliché phrase ‘a game of two halves’ couldn’t have been more accurate.

Coleg Y Cymoedd started the stronger and dominated the early exchanges with and without the ball.

They managed to build numerous phases and stressed the Sir Gar defence throughout. Constant Cymoedd pressure led to points being scored freely and they fully deserved their 18-0 interval lead.

For the Steelers to have any chance of getting back into the game it was essential they scored first and almost immediately from the kick off a moment magic from Scarlets academy winger Ryan Conbeer allowed him to break the Cymoedd defensive line and after some wonderful inter play with full back Harri Doel, Conbeer scored a superb try to open the scoring.

This try was the catalyst for the momentum of the game to change and Coleg Sir Gar were now in total control playing a brand of rugby that’s exciting to watch.

Powerful centre Scott Lloyd was the next to burst through and with sublime skill he pushed a perfect pass to put flying centre Joe Roberts through a hole that allowed him to score underneath the posts.

Coleg Sir Gar continued to dominate and Coleg Y Cymoedd indiscipline allowed Coleg Sir Gar to take the lead with two well taken penalty goals from Scott Lloyd.

Cymoedd weren’t going to give up the cup without a fight and came back strong, but some resilient Steelers defence led to a turnover, Number 8 Gethin Davies was first to react and provided a perfect flip pass that allowed winger Tom Rogers to find himself in space with 75m to go, he showed blistering pace to score untouched and complete the comeback that many few thought was possible.

Coleg Y Cymoedd showed their class to score a late consolation try but the this wasn’t enough to prevent Coleg Sir Gar bringing the cup home to West Wales.
