SCARLETS loosehead prop Phil John has played 51 European games and has experienced the highs and lows of the competition in his 17 seasons with the Scarlets.

John spoke of the frustration at what has been a disappointing campaign for the region after the defeat to Northampton Saints on Saturday night.

He said: “We’re disappointed with the result, we shipped a try for them early on and they managed to build off that. Without that try we felt we could have kept the game tighter in the first half.

“We had a game plan going in and didn’t want the conditions to hamper that. We tried to play the best rugby we could.

“It has been a frustrating European campaign. There’s a lot of boys injured at the moment but it’s also given a lot of younger players a lot of exposure to sample European rugby.”

Despite the frustration and disappointment of the European campaign Scarlets head back into the PRO12 campaign in pole position hoping to finish the season in the play-off positions.

“Obviously next week is a big challenge for us to go to Connacht but we’re targeting the PRO12, that’s hopefully what we’re looking forward to between now and end of the season.

“It’s a difficult place to go but we’ve won there in the past, we all know what it takes to go out there and win.

“There’s a lot of rugby to play in the league between now and the end of the season but we’ll take it one game at a time and look at the challenges ahead.”

Scarlets return to Parc y Scarlets on Friday 12th February, kick-off 8.15pm, to take on Edinburgh Rugby.
