Llandeilo Bowling Club end season on a high note

The 2022 lawn bowls season finished on a high note for Llandeilo Bowling Club (LBC).
President’s day – this year’s president is Sara Nicholls, Commonwealth Games player- was a BBQ
held at the club in glorious sunshine. King Jones and Alan and Angela Roberts donned their apron
and served up gourmet bangers and burgers which were accompanied by salads and desserts
prepared by members.
The President, Sara Nicholls, presented a cheque for £250 on behalf of the club to Cllr Edward
Thomas and Lesley Prosser, chair of the Llandeilo and District dementia group. A further donation of
£190 was made to “Many tears” dog rescue, the President’s chosen charity for the day.
Members spectated as closely contested LBC final competitions were played off to determin club
winners. The fun “spider” competition, traditionally played on President’s day, was won to much
applause, by Lynda James.
LBC’s annual dinner took place last Friday at the Plough Hotel and Restaurant, Rhosmaen when the
cups and trophies were awarded to this year’s winners.
Richard Davies, LBC secretary, was presented by Cllr Edward Thomas with a perpetual silver plate in
recognition of his outstanding contribution to LBC over the last year.
The David Groves pairs trophy was, this year, won by the duo Doug Davies and John Vanlandewyck.
The Alf and Nest pairs trophy went to King Jones and Jean Stancer.
The president’s prize was taken by Richard Palmer.
The “Plough” cup presented by Amanda Cheek on behalf of the hotel was awarded to Richard
Palmer.
LBC champion of the year was Richard Palmer. Richard’s success is particularly impressive for whilst
a highly successful short mat bowler, this was Richard’s first season playing lawn bowls.
The club President paid tribute to all the volunteers who put so much effort into maintaining the
green and the clubhouse during the year for the benefit of members as a whole.
It was encouraging to see the club going from strength to strength not just in terms of new members
but also competition success. LBC ladies had stormed Carmarthenshire Ladies Bowling Association
finals bringing home an unprecedented 6 trophies. To mark their success the five ladies who had
played were each presented with a bunch of yellow roses by the club. It was noted that the men had
this year improved their position in the League and despite being relative new comers to the world
of short mat bowls the club’s team had hit the ground running at the start of the winter tournament.
(New members always welcome Tuesday evenings at 6pm)
The President was congratulated on reaching the quarter finals at the Commonwealth Games having
missed out on a medal to New Zealand by one point on the final end. Sara was wished every success
with selection for the World Bowls Championships which would take place in 2023 on the Gold
Coast.
A great night with good food and excellent company was concluded with the hope that members
“would winter well” and be back in play on the green next Spring.
