Road race success for Harriers

THE 2017 edition of the Admiral Swansea Bay Road Races was held near St Helens, held in its 36th year.

On a day that started rather windy by the Mumbles but dry, the rain arrived just as the 10K runners were about to head off.

Following the World Athletics Championships in London earlier this summer, it had inspired people to get their shoes on and this was evident with this year’s event. Entries had all been taken up with a few weeks to spare in all four races.

The Admiral Swansea Bay 10K took place along the beautiful and iconic sweep of Swansea Bay open to all abilities. In a flat course favourite, the first half of the course followed the road down to the picturesque Mumbles, before returning along the stunning Swansea prom.

A total of 3,517 runners all completed the course in less than two and half hours. Carmarthen Harriers athletes Huw Davies (40:49), Trystan Leech (41:37), Gill Edwards (54:00) and Liz Davies (55:50) were amongst those taking part in the same race as a group of talented Kenyan athletes and the overall event runner up, Dewi Griffiths.

Llanelli AC club seniors were out in their numbers with good latest results coming from: Steve Williams (36:35), Jason Price (37:11), Simon Rees (37:44), Ian Webb (38:12), Martin Flear (38:55), Daniel Totterdale (39:54), Nick Venables (41:33), Paul Robbins (42:04), Rob Campion (47:42), Leighton Webb (50:56), John Marson (54:41), Mike Halsall (54:42) and Emyr Evans (68:40)

As well as the main race, also returning was the junior races. Unfortunately, many of the Carmarthen junior middle distance athletes were not involved this year because of the early closure of entries where they missed out.

It was a good start to the day in the 1K with both Steffan Davies (2nd boy 3:38) and Amy Greatrick (3rd girl 3:39) making it onto the podium after running side by side for the full mile. Due to the popular turnout, this distance was split into two age groups: 7 and under and 8 to 11 years old. Club training partners in Pemberton, Amelie Campion (4:41) and Emily Tucker (4:41) enjoyed their latest day out on the big stage.

The next set of results was the 3K led in by Liam Edwards who came 3rd in the boys section (10.10). Schoolmate Dafydd Jones was not too far behind him in 5th (10.27) with Swyn Dafydd also in the mix (15:07). Llanelli U13 athlete Amy Tucker’ quick run was rewarded with an individual bronze medal after finishing as the 3rd girl across the line (12:12).

In a field of only 13 athletes in the final junior 5K race, the first winner of the day came from Eva Edwards who took the girls title, finishing in 6th place overall (19.52). Cerys Davies was the other representative finishing as the fourth girl (22.04). Callum Campion, running in the red and white vest of Llanelli produced his first sub 19 minute performances on the road with 18:55.
