Nathaniel MG Cup

CARMARTHEN TOWN are through to the quarter finals of the Nathaniel MG Cup after they beat Haverfordwest County after extra time on Tuesday night (Oct 3).

Substitute Liam Walsh was the hero for the Old Gold as his goal deep into extra time ensured their passage into the last eight of the competition.

There was a good crowd at the Bridge Meadow Stadium and they witnessed the home side make a good start to the match.

Dan Williams came close for the Bluebirds early on but his shot went over the bar.

Kristian Speake and Steffan Williams also had chances for the Welsh League Division One side but they were kept at bay by the Old Gold.
Speake then sent a low cross into the box which just evaded everybody and went out for a goal kick.

The Old Gold then had a chance to go ahead when a long throw into the box found Kosta Georgievsky but his fine strike was heroically cleared off the line by Tim Hicks.

The Bluebirds then came the closest to taking the lead when Greg Walters set up Dan Williams who curled an excellent shot towards goal, but, fortunately for the Old Gold, the ball cannoned back off the cross bar.

It remained 0-0 at halftime and both sides were still in with a chance of picking up the victory.

Liam Griffiths came close for the Old Gold in the second half but his shot was saved by Bluebirds keeper Conah McFenton.
Lee Surman also came close for the visitors while Dan Sheehan fired the ball over the bar.

Matthew Broome sent a free kick into the box but Joe Leahy was unable to get a clean connection on the ball and the ball flew wide.
Welsh had a chance for the visitors but his shot was well saved by McFenton and both sides continued to put the pressure in search of that elusive first goal.

The Old Gold almost won it late on but Tyler Brock’s shot was again cleared away by Tim Hicks after McFenton had dropped the ball.
The final whistle went with still no goal separating the two sides and an extra thirty minutes was needed to see who would go through to the quarter finals.

With both sides tiring there was little action in the extra time period but with only a couple of minutes to go, Welsh stepped up for the Old Gold.

A free kick found its way to Welsh in the box and his volley hit the underside of the bar and went in, much to the delight of the Old Gold.

There was still time for another chance but Charlie Davies saw his free kick well saved by Carmarthen keeper Lee Idzi.

The Old Gold hung on for victory and they will now look forward to a quarter final tie with Newtown, to be played on Tuesday, October 24.
