PENRHYNCOCH withstood a late fight back from Gresford Athletic on Saturday (Oct 15) as they won 2-1.

The home side took the lead after only five minutes when Owain James chipped the ball over the defence for Josh Shaw, who slotted the ball in calmly when one on one with the keeper.

Craig Pritchard then sent a dangerous free kick into the box for Gresford but no one was able to get on the end of it.

Pritchard then went close again soon after but his effort went wide of the post.

With just over 20 minutes gone, Penrhyncoch were awarded a penalty when Liam Doherty was brought down in the box.

Arron Lemon picked up the ball and he stroked it home to double the Roosters’ lead.

As half time approached, Gresford had their best chance of the match as a free kick from Mikey Latham smashed back off the crossbar and away to safety.

Penrhyncoch looked comfortable with their 2-0 half time lead but knew they would not be able to sit back in the second half.

Both sides battled away early in the second half but neither side were able to find a way to goal.

The home side did well to keep Gresford out and they were frustrated at the other end as they looked to kill the game off.

With four minutes to go, Gresford finally scored to set up a nervy finish for the home side.

Jonathan Collo then broke forward for the visitors but the ball got away from him and keeper Lee Jenkins was able to pick the ball up.

The visitors continued to push for a late equaliser but the whistle went, bringing a sigh of relief to the Penrhyncoch players and coaches.

The win for the Roosters is their third of the season and lifts them up to 10th place in the Huws Gray Alliance League.

On Saturday (Oct 22), the Roosters face a tough away test against league leaders Prestatyn Town.
