LUNCHTIME sports clubs at Narberth CP School have attracted more than 100 children this year term alone – but they’re not just enjoyed by the pupils, they’re also organised by them!

The school’s Bronze Young Ambassadors have been enthusiastically planning and delivering rugby, football and multiskills sessions, much to the delight of other pupils.

“The clubs have been very popular and the ambassadors have been extremely busy,” said Rhian Williams, deputy headteacher at the school. “They’ve been an inspiration to their peers.”

The 10 ambassadors from years 5 and 6 (aged nine to eleven) have also been responsible for helping the school to raise £1,600 for thyroid cancer support as part of the ‘November Challenge’.

They were inspired to take up the Challenge after attending a Sport Pembrokeshire conference at Haverfordwest, which introduced them to their new roles as Bronze Young Ambassadors and included an inspirational workshop from November Challenge organiser Matthew Evans.

Matthew – aka Captain Cymru – and his team from Activity Wales asked participants to walk, cycle or run one mile a day for the whole of November to raise money for thyroid cancer support.

The ambassadors at Narberth immediately signed up their school to the challenge which resulted in more than 120 pupils between the age of five and 11 walking, scooting, running, swimming and cycling a mile every day and recording their mileage.

The ambassadors helped to facilitate the event by organising letters, measuring the mile track, encouraging pupils to complete their challenge and setting themselves as role models.

Wyndham Williams, Active Young People officer for Sport Pembrokeshire said: “It is so pleasing to see these inspirational Bronze Young Ambassadors making such an impact on the health and well-being of their fellow school pupils.

“The variety of lunchtime clubs run and organised on a weekly basis at Narberth School is making big steps towards Sport Pembrokeshire’s target for getting every child hooked on sport.”
