THE SOUTH WALES CRICKET ASSOCIATION were beaten in Pembrokeshire on Sunday (Jun 10) as they were bowled out 33 runs short of their target.

The Pembrokeshire side exacted revenge for their defeat three weeks ago in Llandysul at the hands of the South Wales Cricket Association, whose skipper Greg Fisher [Gorseinon] again asked his counterpart Sean Hannon [Neyland] to bat first at Hannon’s home ground of the Athletic Ground on Sunday.

Daniel Sutton [Johnston], Ashley Sutton [Neyland] and Nick Kooman [Neyland] departed cheaply to Josh Symmonds [Gorseinon] before opening batsman Simon Holliday [Haverfordwest] formed a fourth wicket partnership with Patrick Bellerby [Neyland], who was drafted into the side to replace the injured Ben Field [Haverfordwest].

Once Bellerby fell to a stumping from Fisher off Daniel Allen [Gorseinon] for 46, Lee Summons [Johnston] fell for a duck and the lower order contributed runs through Henry Durrant [Neyland] with 12, Brad McDermott-Jenkins [Lawrenny], 16 and teenager Kurtis Marsh [Kilgetty] 11, alongside Holiday who was dismissed for 56.

Opening bowler Symmonds took 3-24, whilst Connor Barry [Merthyr: 3-36] and Allen [3-37] also bowled well and Pembrokeshire finished on a final score of 181-9 from their 40 overs. The SWCA reply was built around a third wicket partnership between Steffan Davies [22; Clydach] and Symmonds [44] before James Garland [Clydach] scored 35, leaving the visitors well placed to win the game.

However, inspired bowling from McDermott Jenkins [4-18] in tandem with Daniel Sutton [2-13] saw four of the last five batsmen record ducks as the innings closed on 148ao with eight overs still available to chase down the runs.

Neil Hobbs on behalf of the SWCA was ‘complimentary of the fixture and to Neyland Club, particularly their ground staff who worked diligently to ensure the game was played after the heavy rain wiped out the majority of the Saturday cricket programme.’

Hobbs, Chairman of the SWCA and the newly formed Cricket wales South West Board is very keen to ensure that the ‘games between the two Associations continue, fostering better relations whilst also allowing the best players in the area to show case their talents.’

Richard Merriman, Vice Chairman of Pembroke County Cricket Club said: “Delighted to secure the win on a difficult pitch, which our top order had to battle hard on at first. The team spirit engendered by Sean Hannon has set the ground beat for the sides performance and the middle / lower order responded with crucial late runs.

“We did make some errors in the field but Brad McDermott Jenkins spell from the Scoreboard end was superb and despite the non-availability of some players due to the Village cup its testament to our strength as a County that we can compete and beat the SWCA. They have been two excellent fixtures and we look forward already to next year to play each other again.”
