Ioan and Garan Croft: Faced older opponents

THERE WAS FRUSTRATION and disappointment for Cardigan ABC pair Ioan and Garan Croft who were both edged out on split decisions by older opponents in the semi-finals of the Three Nations Championships in Cardiff on Saturday (Apr 30).

The 14-year-old Crymych twins, this year competing in the lower end of their age group, both received tough draws against top-ranked English opposition.

Competing in the 46kg class, Ioan faced counter-punching southpaw Hopey Price and, despite taking the centre of the ring for much of the contest and matching the English boy punch for punch, was adjudged to have lost by the narrowest of margins.

It was a similar story for brother Garan who, competing in the 48kg class, came up just short against Ethan James, a front foot boxer who came forward from the start.

Cardigan ABC head coach Guy Croft vowed his sons would next year achieve ‘the double’ against the cream of young boxing talent from Wales, Scotland and England.

“Training starts this Monday,” he added.

“Hopey was 21 months older than Ioan and Ethan 19 months older than Garan. Next year our boys will be at the top end of the junior age group.”
