Wanderers edged out by Llanelli

LLANELLI won their derby game with Carmarthen Wanderers on Saturday (Jun 30) to move themselves out of the bottom two.

The game was played at Trinity Fields and it was Llanelli who won the toss and elected to bat first.

They lost Marcus Leaf early on when he was caught by Gareth Thomas off the bowling of Joseph Jones and when Craig Howells was trapped leg before by Jones, Llanelli had slipped to 26-2.

Iwan Rees and Steven Devonald then shared 110 runs for the third wicket as they looked to help teir side to a decent total.

That partnership came to an end when Devonald was caught by Nathan Burrell, also off the bowling of Jones, for a score of 42 (3 fours).

Rees then shared another 32 runs with Ryan Nicholas before he was caught and bowled by Gareth Thomas for a score of 75 which included ten fours.

Nicholas then shared another 29 runs with Rhidian Morgan who made 18 before he was caught by Stephen Inward off the bowling of Robbie Crawford.

Robert Bowen made a score of 8 before he was caught off the bowling of Thomas and Alex Symmons scored seven before he was caught and bowled by Crawford.

Crawford struck again to bowl Morgan Jones for a duck as he finished with figures of 3-58.

Nicholas finished the inning not out on 49 with three fours and a six as he helped his side to a total of 239-8.

Carmarthen knew they would need to make a good start in their reply but they soon found themselves on the back foot as Owain Davies was caught by Iwan Rees off the bowling of Steven Devonald for a golden duck.

Gareth Thomas fell soon after when he was caught by Morgan Jones off the bowling of Vaughan Thomas.

Joshua Thomas and Stephen Inward then shared 39 runs for the third wicket but Thomas was caught by Rhidian Morgan off the bowling of Alex Symmons for a score of 13 and the Wanderers were struggling on 41-3.

Inward shared another 33 runs with Inward but he was caught and bowled by Rees for a score of 22.

Robbie Crawford joined Inward at the crease and the pair put on 55 runs for the fifth wicket which also saw Inward reach his half century.

Crawford scored just ten runs before he was stumped by Morgan Jones off the bowling of David Richards and his wicket left the Wanderers on 132-5.

Captain Leighton Walters joined Inward at the crease and the pair shared another 39 runs before Inward was eventually out, caught by Robert Bowen off the bowling of Symmons for an excellent score of 87 which included nine fours and three sixes.

Walters scored 31 but was also caught by Morgan off the bowling of Symmons and soon after, Ian Hughes was caught by Morgan off the bowling of Devonald for another golden duck.

Joesph Jones made a late score of 15 before he was bowled by Symmons who picked up his fourth wicket and although Nathan Burrell finished not out on 15 it wasn’t enough for the Wanderers.

They finished on a total of 220-9 giving victory to their opponents.

On Saturday (Jul 7), Llanelli will look to pick up another win when they host Malpas. The Wanderers will look to bounce back as they travel to Panteg.
