Welsh backpacker tragically loses life in Thai kayaking accident

A SOMBER event unfolded in Thailand as 24-year-old Shanghaman Gowribalan from Swansea lost his life in a kayaking accident at the renowned Cheow Lan Dam. The incident occurred on Sunday, February 11, when Gowribalan was exploring the scenic lake with his friends. The tragedy struck at approximately 9 am, leading to a sequence of events that culminated in the recovery of his body three days later.

The Cheow Lan Dam, nestled within the picturesque Khao Sok National Park, is a favored destination for travelers seeking natural beauty and outdoor adventures. Gowribalan’s untimely demise casts a shadow on this idyllic location, serving as a stark reminder of the unpredictability inherent in recreational activities.

Reports suggest that the young backpacker fell into the water approximately 500 meters away from the Kraisorn Raft House, a remote area known for its depth. His companion, who witnessed the incident, promptly rowed back to the shore to raise the alarm, initiating a search and rescue operation. Despite the extensive efforts of rescue teams, Gowribalan’s lifeless body was discovered on Wednesday morning.

A spokesperson for the Khao Sok National Park disclosed the details of the recovery, stating, “The body was then taken to Ban Ta Khun Hospital, while his relatives have been contacted to inform them about the discovery.” The incident is being treated by local authorities as a tragic accident, underscoring the inherent risks associated with water-related activities in unfamiliar environments.

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office is actively engaged in providing support to the grieving family. A spokesperson stated, “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Thailand and are in contact with the local authorities.” The collaboration between the local and international authorities aims to navigate the complexities surrounding such incidents and ensure that the necessary support is extended to the bereaved family during this challenging time.
