COUNCILLORS have voted a majority of nine to six in favour of increasing the cost of burials at the cemetery by 10%.
Before their next meeting, councillors will visit Elim Road’s cemetery, where they will further discuss increasing the costs for burials in the next financial year. The plans would allow Muslim burials at the town cemetery.
Members of the council have said that the rise will bring the Carmarthen Town Council in line with other authorities, but some feel that there is no need for an increase. Some think that it is irrelevant how much other councils charge for burial plots, and therefore feel that there is no reason for Carmarthen to follow suit.
