24 hour help for domestic abuse victims

201310041423101_smA HELPLINE providing vital support to victims of domestic abuse will operate throughout Christmas and New Year says Public Services Minister, Leighton Andrews. The Welsh Government funded All-Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline is free to call* and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Leighton Andrews said: “evidence shows that instances of domestic abuse can increase over Christmas and New Year and victims often don’t know where to turn for help over the long festive shutdown. Fortunately, help is only a phone call away as the All- Wales Domestic Abuse Helpline will be working throughout the period.” The helpline – 0808 80 10 800 – is staffed by professionals who have an extensive knowledge of domestic abuse and sexual violence related issues. The Minister added: “My commitment to tackling domestic abuse, in all forms and for every victim, is unwavering.

“Victims are often too afraid or too ashamed to speak out which is why dedicated helplines, such as ours in Wales, are invaluable. “For many people, making that first telephone call and talking to a stranger about their problems is the first step to breaking away from the cycle of abuse.” During 2013 the helpline managed 27,830 calls, which is an average of 76.2 calls a day.
