NEIL HAMILTON, MS for Mid & West Wales, and Leader of UKIP Wales, is urging his constituents to beware of fraudsters pretending to be from a major supermarket chain.

Mr Hamilton, a member of the Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs committee, was commenting after Dyfed-Powys Police warned the public to be on their guard for scammers pretending to be from Tesco.

He said: “Only last week I warned people in my Region about rogue traders trying to cash in on Covid by offering to carry out property maintenance and repair work at extortionate amounts of money for little or no work.

“It really is scandalous and alarming that fraudsters seem determined to take advantage of others while the rest of the country continues to fight this dreadful virus.

“More and more people are shopping for their groceries on-line and whilst the current crisis brings out the best in most people there are, sadly, those who see it is an opportunity to take advantage of others.

“I am saddened to hear about people who have been conned out of money by these fraudsters and urge my constituents to be on their guard.

“It is vital for everyone to be extra cautious at this time and if you are suspicious about a call or an email then do not give out any personal details. End the call immediately and report the matter.”

Dyfed Powys Police, say they have received a number of reports about scam calls from fraudsters pretending to be Tesco.

The automated call states that your Tesco order has been placed and your account will be debited £350. The call goes on to say “if this is not the right amount, please press 1 to go through to our fraud team”.

With this type of call, if ‘1’ is pressed, the scammer will attempt to gain as many personal details as possible from you, including your bank details.

These are smart criminals who know what they’re doing, and they will often appear genuine. If you receive a call like this, it’s best to hang up and either check your Tesco online account yourself, or call Tesco directly from a number you have obtained.

If you have fallen victim to this type of fraud then email [email protected] or call 101.
