[UPDATED] Man dies following Aberystwyth RNLI rescue

Aberystwyth Atlantic 85 class lifeboatTWO men were pulled from the waters off the Aberystwyth coast this morning (Aug 31). Unfortunately, one of the casualties has now died it has been confirmed by police.

The lifeboat crew launched the Atlantic class lifeboat at 9:30am following reports of an empty boat circling in the bay with two persons in the water. The volunteer crew arrived on scene – approximately 500 meters offshore – and quickly pulled the men into the safety of the lifeboat.

The volunteers immediately started first aid treatment on one of the casualties as they made their way back to shore.  First aid treatment was continued on dry land by more crew until the Welsh Ambulance service teams arrived.

The coastguard rescue helicopter arrived on scene but it was decided to take both casualties to Bronglais Hospital via road ambulance, where both casualties received further treatment.

Unfortunately, one of the men died shortly after.

A Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman said: “UK Coastguard, the RNLI and the Welsh Ambulance Service responded to an incident involving two men requiring assistance in the sea near Aberystwyth Harbour.

“Sadly, one of the casualties has passed away. Specialist officers are supporting the family. The second casualty is in a stable condition at hospital.”
