AN ABERYSTWYTH councillor has launched a petition calling for traffic calming measures in Llanbadarn Fawr, after figures showed that more than 60 people had already been arrested for speeding this year.
Figures released by Dyfed Powys Police, show that 61 incidents of people exceeding the 30mph speed limit were recorded on Primrose Hill in 2016, up until the end of September.
The figures, obtained by a Freedom of Information request by local Councillor, Paul James, show the figure to be the highest in the last five years.
The FOI also revealed that four road traffic collision incidents had been reported to the police last year and one this year, along with one reported injury.
Cllr Paul James said: “The fact that there have been so many bookings by the police for people exceeding the speed limit is no surprise to local residents here in the village. The figures seem to be rising, and this shows that action is needed.
“There is also a risk that pressure on the route will continue to rise with people potentially trying to avoid the new traffic lights in Aberystwyth, and the houses expected to be built on the Waun and in Llanbadarn as forecast in the LDP.
“The road is already dangerous and very busy. We are lucky that the number of incidents is not much higher as it is.
“I have started a petition, which has over 150 signatures online and almost a 100 on paper, calling on Ceredigion Council to do a feasibility study into traffic calming measures on the road.
“Everyone who uses this route to go to school, college, work, or even to pop into the village, will know how dangerous it can be, and I ask that you take the time to sign the petition.”
