Man claims knife ‘was to cut sandwiches’

A LLANELLI man caught with a lock knife by police after being detained for shoplifting told officers that he used it to cut his sandwiches.

Appearing in Llanelli Law Courts on Thursday (Jul 26) 62-year-old Polish national Andrzej Giszczak pleaded guilty to charges of possessing a knife in public and theft from a shop.

Prosecuting, Sian Vaughan explained that on July 6, security staff at Llanelli Asda observed the defendant exiting the store carrying a crate of cider and a rotisserie chicken valued at £12 which he had not paid for.

Giszczak was stopped outside and taken back into the store, and the police were called. When they arrived the searched the defendant, and found the knife in his pocket. The court heard that Giszczak had a previous conviction for shoplifting dating back to 2016.

Defence solicitor Andrew Isaac said that his client had no recollection of the thefts. He added that his client had been sitting on a bench near the store when he was given a cigarette by strangers, and believed that this could have contained drugs.

Following a report from the probation service, Giszczak was sentenced to a total of eight weeks imprisonment, suspended for a year, and ordered to pay costs totalling £200.
