BURRY PORT HARBOUR is now in the safe hands of marina specialists to undergo investment and improvement as part of plans to create a world-class facility for boat owners and tourists.
The Marine Group is now on site, having been granted a long-term lease from Carmarthenshire County Council.
Leasing the harbour to experienced marina specialists is part of the council’s plan to ensure its long-term sustainability, and forms part of its wider regeneration masterplan for Burry Port.
The Marine Group has existing marinas in Cardiff, Aberystwyth and Port Dinorwic and has plans to develop the harbour with modern berthing facilities and initiatives to attract more users and visitors.
Plans are also in the pipeline to convert and extend the existing RNLI building, once the new lifeboat base is complete, to provide a new marina management office, with changing rooms and a café and restaurant unit.
Director Christopher Odling-Smee said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Carmarthenshire Council to realise the full potential of Burry Port Harbour. The marina will benefit from substantial focus and investment which will, in time, position it as a premier destination for boaters and non-boaters alike. We are proud to be associated with Burry Port.”
The long-term arrangement is set to create a financial return to the authority with a guaranteed revenue stream.
The council’s executive board member for leisure, Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, said: “We only want the best for Burry Port Harbour, and this move has put it in to the very safe hands of a company with lots of experience and resources to make a real difference. We look forward to seeing developments take shape, and of course the start of a wider positive impact for residents of Burry Port and the wider area who will benefit from this investment.”
