Carmarthenshire to ‘benefit’ from major new rail investment

PLANS for a new railway station in Felindre and a multi-million pound upgrade to Cardiff Central have been welcomed by the leader of Carmarthenshire County Council.

Cllr Emlyn Dole said the move would boost rail services across the city region and reduce journey times to and from West Wales.

Around £80 million has been pledged by the UK Government today (Mon, July 22) to overhaul Cardiff Central Railway Station and build a new station at Felindre.

Cllr Dole says the Felindre Parkway development will add value for the region in addition to the existing services.

It will mean a 14-minute journey time saving from West Wales to Cardiff for train commuters in Carmarthenshire. Research shows the rail journey takes longer than a car journey from West Wales to Cardiff and onto London.

Cardiff Central will undergo a complete re-build with longer platforms and better access.

Carmarthenshire County Council Leader, Cllr Emlyn Dole said: “This is very welcome news, which will benefit Carmarthenshire businesses and residents. An initial 14-minute reduction in journey times to Cardiff and onto London will make a significant difference to passengers travelling that route. New infrastructure, with supporting additional rail journeys to West Wales, is essential to boost the regional economic prosperity. And with traffic continuing to grow on key trunk roads across West Wales, an improved offer from rail both in journey time, frequency and quality of service is vital to help tackle congestion and improve connectivity. As a council we are committed to cutting our carbon footprint, so schemes of this nature should be welcomed.”
