HOLLYWOOD star Michael Sheen has been praised by Carmarthenshire’s Deputy Leader for backing the Say No to Debt Row campaign.
Cllr Pam Palmer said she welcomed the support of the Welsh-born actor for the campaign which aims to encourage more people to use credit unions.
Say No to Debt Row is being led by Welsh credit unions and aims to highlight the issue of debt in Wales.
Mr Sheen, who became Patron of Credit Unions of Wales in September, is helping promote the campaign which offers credit unions as an alternative to loan sharks or other types of lending.
Cllr Palmer said: “Having a Hollywood star to speak out in support of this campaign will help ensure the message is spread as widely as possible.
“Far too many families find themselves in debt to loan sharks, which can escalate into frightening situations.
“Unfortunately, poverty is still with us, even in this day and age. We have increasing numbers of people using food banks to help feed their families, and who put themselves in debt through sheer desperation, particularly at this time of year with Christmas on the way.
“Credit unions are a safe, affordable and viable alternative to getting yourself in debt through high interest loans, or worse.”
Cllr Palmer has also launched this year’s Toybox appeal to help give gifts to families in need across Carmarthenshire.
