AFTER a 12-month absence, Pembrokeshire Fish Week is to return in 2016.
Established in 2000, the county-wide festival comprises over 200 events and is attended by some 30,000 people each year.
It is estimated that Fish Week contributes around £2.7m to the local economy and, along with Ironman Wales, is a major strand of the Authority’s events strategy.
Now, with the possibility of fresh backing and supported by the Welsh Government’s Major Events Unit, the Council is looking to resume the festival.
“I am delighted to announce that Fish Week is back next year,” said the Council’s Cabinet Member for Transportation and Major Events, Councillor Rob Lewis.
“The Milford Haven Port Authority – which stepped in to run the Milford Fish Festival on the docks in June – has indicated its willingness to repeat the ‘open day’ event again in 2016 with the Council’s support.
“This will leave the Council responsible for running the county-wide event during the remainder of the week.”
Earlier this year work began on creating a social enterprise to run and deliver Pembrokeshire Fish Week from 2017 and a business plan is currently being finalised. Cllr Lewis explained: “The advantages of creating a social enterprise are that it will be able to secure more private sector sponsorship; it will develop the festival to the next level with a board of directors who have experience of events, and generally become more commercially driven.
Next year Pembrokeshire Fish Week will run from Saturday, 25th June to Sunday, 3rd July.
