Following several consultations with youngsters in Llandeilo, the Llandeilo Children and Youth Society has decided to start operating an After School Club in the downstairs room of the Civic Hall.
An agreement with the Civic Hall has been reached and the Society hopes to operate the club from mid-April.
“While we had big plans to set up a full-blown Youth Club, the kids we chatted to really just wanted a cosy place with WiFi and other amenities to hang out in,” explains society chairman Christoph Fischer.
“In a way this has made our life easier to start with as we do not need qualified youth workers but only supervising staff. We’re now looking for volunteers as well as any soft furnishing donations, preferably beanie bags that can easily be stored away.”
One of the reasons the program can now go ahead is that the Society is teaming up with Llandeilo Box of Fists Gym, which will share the location and bring it to use at times and days when the After School Club isn’t operating.“We both want the same thing,” says Box of Fists founder Woody Lewis.
“Get kids off the streets, stop antisocial behaviour, create a safe space and fight boredom. Box of Fists received a community fund from CAVS and by pooling our resources with the Llandeilo Youth and Children Society we can have sole use of the premises in the Civic Hall and make our money stretch further.”
“After two years of setbacks because of the pandemic and locations becoming unavailable this is absolutely fantastic,” glows Fischer. “We still have bigger ambitions and plans on the back burner, but for now it’s a huge step in the right direction.”
Box of Fists will run classes for children, adults and for those with different abilities. The After School Club will be open to youngsters between the ages of 14 and 18 years of age.
