REPRESENTATIVES of the Lord’s Taverners were recently in Carmarthen to present staff and pupils at Canolfan Elfed, Queen Elizabrth School with a new Lord’s Taverners specially adapted minibus.
Since 1976, the Lord’s Taverners has placed over 1,150 accessible minibuses across schools in the UK. The iconic Lord’s Taverners minibuses provide disadvantaged and disabled young people with the chance to engage with their local community by getting more access to the facilities on offer and build important life skills in the process.
Canolfan Elfed is an inclusion centre for pupils with additional learning needs and caters for 62 pupils aged 11-19, who have a wide range of significant learning difficulties.
The pupils receive specialist care and have a bespoke curriculum according to their individual needs, with a great emphasis on developing life and work skills in the community.
The new 16-seat specially adapted minibus will replace a current accessible minibus that is old and unreliable. As the school is located on the outskirts of town, they are reliant on minibuses to be able to access the local community. The new Lord’s Taverners minibus will enable Canolfan Elfed pupils to continue weekly archery and cycling lessons, as well as visit the local town to carry out life skills activities.
Rhiannon Stephens-Davies, Inclusion Centre Manager, Queen Elizabeth High School, said: “We’re all very excited about our new minibus! We will all feel more confident venturing further afield without the worry of breaking down. Being a wheelchair-accessible minibus it will also give pupils who use wheelchairs the opportunity to travel together with their friends. We would like to thank all those who have raised money to make this possible, especially the Lord’s Taverners.”

This minibus will help the Canolfan Elfed pupils to get out and enjoy new places and experiences in Carmarthen.
